Welcome to another edition of IDP Education's USA newsletter. We thank you for your support as we continue making progress toward our goal of bringing a significant number of new foreign students into the United States.
Introducing IDP Education's U.S. Charter Partners
IDP Education is pleased to publicly announce its first group of university clients. Our charter partners are being proactive in working to compete for students worldwide. They offer a wealth of academic and life choices for our students, and we are proud to have earned their trust as partners and to be their support overseas. They are (in order of signing):
St. Michael's College
Chaminade University
Dean College
Keck Graduate Institute
Saint Francis University
Bellarmine University
Lewis University
Ashland University
Fisher College
University of Mississippi
College of Wooster
Mary Baldwin College
St. Leo University
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
What's newsworthy is that the majority of these U.S. partners have never used agents in the past, highlighting a potential new dynamic in international student recruitment.
In the months ahead, we expect the number of new partners to increase dramatically, especially as the company's counseling operations begin overseas and the Fall semester approaches.
Counseling Begins in Hyderabad and Ahmedabad
As mentioned in previous editions of this newsletter, IDP brought some of its top counselors from India to the United States for training. Since then, we've added several experienced counselors to lead our student counseling launch in the Indian cities of Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. Operations are expected to commence in the middle of December for our charter partner universities.
To help facilitate this gold standard counseling, we are delighted to announce the addition of Luna Das as National Manager - Counselor Training and Client Development for the United States, based out of the India headquarters office in New Delhi. Luna joins us from the U.S. Education Foundation In India (USEFI) where she worked as a senior manager for student services for the past five years.
AIRC Certifies IDP's U.S. Counseling Practice
IDP Education has become one of the first organizations to be certified by the American International Recruitment Council (AIRC), a recognition of the company's quality approach to recruiting international students for American colleges and universities. AIRC based its decision on IDP's current practice as well as its extensive plans for serving the American university community.
After extensive review of the company's overseas activities, IDP is now officially recognized as a trustworthy student recruitment partner by this non-profit organization of American universities. AIRC is officially registered as a standards development organization with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. We have previously participated as a pilot agency member, offering assistance in the development of standards designed to raise the quality of independent student recruiting overseas.
"We are proud supporters of AIRC's efforts to certify agent practices and are honored to be part of its initial certification," said IDP Education CEO Tony Pollock at the inaugural AIRC conference in Miami, Florida, where the organization's first eight certifications were announced. "We believe the U.S. higher education community must accept the use of agents if it is to maintain its position as the world's top recruiter of international students, and AIRC's activities go a long way to making that a reality."
Expanded Staff, New Offices
With the addition of Michael Lucci, Carolyn Redmond and soon Michael Haines, IDP's U.S. staff now numbers nine. To accommodate this growth, the company has moved into new offices in central Philadelphia. Our new address is:
IDP Education
1818 Market Street, Suite 1105
Philadelphia, PA 19103
Main phone number: 215-282-1880
eFax number: 610-672-9698
Eleven Conferences Since September
In a session titled "How to Sell to American Universities" at this year's ICEF conference, IDP's North America director Mark Shay wrapped up an impressive first semester of academic community participation. Eleven conferences ranging from MACRAO (registrars) in Boyne Mountain Michigan to the Council of Graduate Schools (graduate deans) in San Francisco to APLU (university presidents) in Washington, D.C. demonstrated our commitment to active participation in the higher education network. Known by institutions as an academic partner in Australia, IDP is well on its way to successfully continuing that tradition in the United States.
In addition to the conferences, we are on the road getting to know prospective university partners. Our goal is to always visit a campus before a contract is presented, to truly get to know the organization and determine if we would be good partners together. Now with four of our representatives travelling the country, our list of cities starts to sound like that famous Johnny Cash's song, "I've Been Everywhere." If we haven't been to your campus, we'd love to make a stop. Contact us to schedule a visit and learn more about how you can advance your international recruitment efforts with a trusted partner.

IDP Education is One of the First International Student Placement Services Recognized by Agent Certification Organization
Media release - Philadelphia, PA - IDP Education, the world’s largest student placement firm, has become one of the first organizations to be certified by the American International Recruitment Council, a recognition of the company’s quality approach to recruiting international students for U.S. colleges and universities.
Following an extensive review of the company’s overseas activities, IDP Education is now officially recognized as a trustworthy student recruitment partner by AIRC, a non-profit standards development organization with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission that consists of U.S. institutions. IDP Education had been participating as a pilot agency member, offering assistance in the development of standards designed to raise the quality of independent student recruiting overseas.
“We are proud supporters of AIRC’s efforts to certify agent practices and are honored to be part of its initial certification,” said IDP Education CEO Tony Pollock at the inaugural AIRC conference in Miami, Florida, where the organization’s first eight certifications were announced. “We believe the U.S. higher education community must accept the use of agents if it is to maintain its position as the world’s top recruiter of international students, and AIRC’s activities go a long way to making that a reality.”
Founded 40 years ago by 38 Australian universities to facilitate international learning and growth in Southeast Asia, IDP Education placed more than 25,000 students into an Australian higher education program last year. In May of this year, the company announced its entry into the United States as the next step in a global expansion. The organization prides itself on being student focused by staffing more than 500 professional counselors as full-time employees throughout Asia and the Middle East, helping students and their families find the right fit for their dream of higher education.
IDP Education’s North America Director, Mark Shay, sees the AIRC certification program as a positive step in the development of the international student recruiting industry. Says Shay, “Universities in Australia, Canada and the UK have prospered through the use of trusted marketing partners and there is now a growing recognition of professional practice in the United States, as evidenced by IDP Education’s entry into the market and AIRC’s setting of quality benchmarks.”

IDP Education Announces First U.S. Partner Institutions
Variety of Institutions New to Agents Highlights Revamped Focus on International Student Recruiting
Media release - Philadelphia, PA - IDP Education has released a list of institutions that have signed on for its international student placement services. What’s noteworthy is that the majority of these “charter partners” have never used agents in the past, highlighting a potential new dynamic in international student recruitment.
The world’s largest student placement firm, IDP Education uses a wide network of counseling centers to recruit for Australian universities, and announced in May a global expansion led by the move into the United States. The company began recruiting partners in September, and believes today’s announcement of 12 charter partners is indicative of the changing climate in the United States, where international enrollment is being viewed with new importance.
“As the number of traditional college students drops and overseas institutions advance their recruiting efforts, U.S. universities face unprecedented competition that, if left unchecked, could lead to another iconic American industry succumbing to foreign competition,” says Mark Shay, North American director of IDP Education. “Our charter partners are being proactive in working to compete for students worldwide. They offer a wealth of academic and life choices for our students, and we are proud to have earned their trust as partners and to be their support overseas.”
The 12 charter partners are:
• University of Mississippi
• Lewis University
• Mary Baldwin College
• St. Michael's College
• Dean College
• Keck Graduate Institute
• Saint Francis University
• Chaminade University
• Bellarmine University
• Ashland University
• Fisher College
• College of Wooster
“The University of Mississippi has strengthened its international profile considerably over the past decade and looks forward to a new era of intensified activity,” says Michael Metcalf, associate provost for international affairs at the University of Mississippi. “Partnering with IDP Education is the first time we have utilized a recruiting agency in addressing our desire to increase international enrollment. As a member of the American International Recruitment Council, we are confident that IDP Education will be certified by that body and impressed by the firm's history in service to Australian universities.”
Lewis University Director of International Services Michael Fekete seconds the call for advancing its international recruitment efforts, saying, “Lewis University believes it is the right time for U.S. higher education to consider a more proactive approach to marketing itself around the world. Working with IDP Education allows us to carefully consider and professionally approach the growing global demand for quality programs and services while finding the appropriate fit for our potential students and their families.”
IDP Education will begin counseling students from India first, before expanding to an additional 21 countries throughout Asia and the Middle East. The company’s model differs from that of traditional agents, as professionally-trained employees counsel for a variety of institution types in order to provide what Harmeet Pental, IDP’s regional director of Southeast Asia, calls, “honest, informed guidance on what will best lead to a student’s academic success and achievement of career goals.”
“We believe it’s our unique network of dedicated counselors, as well as our focus on professional standards and unbiased fee structures, that drew institutions that have never worked with agents,” says Shay. “This new atmosphere requires all new recruitment efforts.”
As IDP Education begins pairing students with institutions, Shay says he expects more to join and create a broad-based cooperative of international-minded universities. He hopes to be able to achieve the same success the company has had in Australia, though he acknowledges what a tough challenge that will be. Adds Pental, “With a median age of just 25.3 years and a population viewing higher education as critical to securing economic success, India will see a sustained growth in demand for high quality education. Key for U.S. institutions is to be able to reach out to the many diverse areas, beyond traditional cities, that are driving economic growth. This is where IDP’s strength lies.”
IDP Education’s expansion is in support of the projection from CEO Anthony Pollock that 1 million foreign students will be studying in the United States by 2015.
